Salem-Keizer welcomes students for new school year Thousands of students returned to Salem-Keizer schools Wednesday for the new school year. Sixth and ninth graders got an early start Tuesday, while remaining elementary, middle and high schoolers joined them Wednesday. Kindergartners will begin school Sept. 11. Salem-Keizer Public Schools is projecting enrollment this school year at 38,857 students across its 65 elementary, middle and high schools. That's down from 39,964 last year.
